Abstract

Loneliness is a word that occurs in several ways and in different contexts. In addition, there are various forms of loneliness that are often described as intertwined with each other. We describe the existential dimension of loneliness, existential loneliness, in contexts where older persons in Sweden are cared for. Being cared for in the later phase of life is a situation that can mean vulnerability and exposure. The article provides an insight into several different perspectives that have been explored regarding existential loneliness in frail older people and what alleviates existential loneliness. We can conclude that genuine and mutual encounters with other persons and being listened to are significant and contributes to existential health.
